Chest!

You see a chest on the ground. You carefully approach it, and since there apparently are no hidden traps or lurking monsters, you decide to open the chest. Then…

I found a chest, and there seems to be no danger exploring it...

I found a chest, and there seems to be no danger exploring it...

Well, then what? What should happen? The items inside chest will be shown in a pop-up window? Items are scattered around the chest? Items will automatically be moved to your inventory? You get a closeup of the chest, and you can pick items with  mouse clicks?

There are several options, which one should I choose?

This is also a broader issue, since the chest is just one of cases where you have to add items to inventory. These are other common scenarios:

  • pick item from ground
  • looting a killed monster
  • buying item from a shop
  • getting item from NPC (quest item, quest rewrad)

The way of getting items needs to be consistent, easy (as little clicks and dragging as possible) and yet the ui must communicate the changes in inventory clearly.

I think the idea of item popping up in a window would be a better choice, infact i would freeze the in game screen when there is a window popping up. I can then choose the “pick” or “ignore” option. Once picked, the item will go into the inventory :)

hmm, yes, I think I’ll do something like that. And I’ll probably add pick all button too, since why leave loot unlooted =D
