I see ghosts!
Making monster graphics is fun, but I need to cut corners here too. Animating walk sequences for legged monsters takes time, so I try to make as many legless mosters as possible. Here are some fast monster designs I have made lately:

As you can see, all kind of floating ghostly monsters are ideal… Naturally there needs to be large variety of monsters, all can’t be just floating balls and disks. But these simple designs will give me something to work with when setting up the combat system.

You could just make a set of generic legs, then cut and paste them onto new monsters bodies – adjust the colours, perhaps add a few bits and bobs, but basically use the same set of legs multiple times?
What program did you make the ghosts in?
Yes, some sort of generalization would be good… but on the other hand, using human legs for spiders and wolves isn’t going to give very realistic results (although results could be interesting…). I’ll post an image of the female player character animation timeline, I think it’ll give some idea why I try to avoid animating lots of legged creatures =)
Those monsters graphics are done in flash, with no bitmap textures or such. just simple vector stuff, layered to give some depth.
Well, with a spider, you only need to animate one leg, don’t you? Then duplicate it seven times?
But I have to admit, I’m use to working in bitmap and really don’t know much about vector graphics.
